Some note-worthy "Nashville Cats" and many other special guests performed at the Raven Center For the Arts on March 27th through the 30th, 2008 with musicians entertaining all through the night until sunrise each day. Master Potter and esteemed artist, David J. Porter, hosted the event to benefit the Raven Center for the Arts. All invitees and their guests would agree that the real benefit was in being there to share in the spirit. If you have never been to one of his events, you have surely missed out. Don’t miss your opportunity next time!
The event was free to the public and guests were trilled with free fine cuisine, art exhibitions, pottery workshops, and many styles of music--bluegrass, country, blues, and rock. Everyone loved the chief, Kathleen Szabo, who traveled all the way from Florida to volunteer her time and talents to make sure there was something to satisfy everyone’s taste on her 5 star quality buffet. No one walked away hungry!
Many invited guests, artists, craftsmen/craftswomen, musicians, and songwriters were in town as well as local musical geniuses. Sessions were open to all, and included an eclectic mix of instruments, artists, and performers. Those who participated and were there to share in the enjoyment were consistently amazed with the often irresistible urge to join in.
Our major heavy hitters from Tennessee included: Tim Jones (son writer, guitar , vocals), Al Wiseman (guitar, bongos, vocals), Dave Cain (guitar, vocals), John Ryder (blues harp, vocals, session promoter and founder of Ashland City Limits Blues Festival), Greg Hunt (guitar, vocals, songwriter for Big K Productions in Nashville, guitarist for Desert Sky, N-1 Band & The Placebos), Dr. Greg Hunt (guitar), Raymond Creasy (guitar, vocals), Sue Creasy (mandolin), and Howard Thomason (bongos, & recipient of Vanderbilt's Commodore Award).
The combination of Nashville talent, along with the fine local music expertise of Jeff Chapman (guitar and percussion), Andy Bowman (saxophone), Rock Suzy (fiddle), Pa Bailey (mandolin, guitar), Jo Stucker (doe-brow), and many more, made for an excellent mix of marvelous talent that trilled spectators of all ages.
Because of the success of the event, a “transplant fund” is being set up to assist in bringing a little bit of that Nashville Sound to Ellsinore. There were discussions amongst several members of the sessions, culminating in the idea to acquire land in the immediate vicinity of the Raven Center for a sound studio, performance hall, and creative arts center for music. Eventual plans are to have assistance available to match talents and skills, promoting the arts in this area and having a direct pipeline to the Nashville Recording Industry right here from Ellsinore. Notable performing artists and songwriters will be invited to share and mentor local artists, lending their skills and direction, and will be able to pursue their own songwriting and recording in a setting that just cannot be found in Nashville. Kudos to Ellsinore for having what Nashville wants!
If you would like to assist in this latest endeavor, please contact The Raven Center For the Arts at 573-998-2611. Please visit the website often, and make plans to attend the next event. Don’t forget to pledge your support.
